“I don’t think the laws of physics apply here,” she whispered, watching the staircase ripple like water.

“What’s physics?” Benny wagged his tail. If physics meant treats, that was definitely worth climbing the weird staircase.

“It’s… like the rules for what can and can’t happen.” Ella turned to look at him. “You know, like, Physically?”

“I can do stairs.” Said Benny. “I do stairs really good.”

“Benny, look at the stairs.”

Benny looked at the stairs. He looked back at Ella. Ella had her arms folded, waiting for him to say something.

“I do stairs really good.” Benny repeated.

Benny put his front paw on the first step. The step folded over his paw and dragged him up the rest of the staircase. He looked back at Ella, still stuck in the basement.

“Come on, Ella!” Benny said. “It’s totally scary, and probably safe.”

Ella groaned, but knelt down and put her hand on the stair. It clamped around her hand and pulled her up next to Benny.

“Good girl!” Benny said.

“I still say it’s wrong.” Ella looked around. “Benny, is that a light fixture on the floor?”

“I can pee on it and we can find out.”

“No, Benny, I’m saying we’re upside down.”

“So which way would my pee go?”

“Benny…”
